The Beauty of Istighfar: Why Seeking Forgiveness Is More Than Saying Sorry

Istighfar is more than a ritual phrase. It’s a return. A quiet, sincere turning back to the One who knows you better than you know yourself.

The Prophet ﷺ used to seek forgiveness more than 70 times a day — and he was sinless. If that doesn’t show its importance, what else will?

“So say, ‘Astaghfirullah,’ for indeed, He is ever Forgiving.” (Surah Nuh, 71:10)

What makes Istighfar beautiful?

  • It’s intimate — a private moment between you and Allah.
  • It’s powerful — wiping away sins and lifting burdens.
  • It’s renewing — a fresh start without needing anyone’s permission.

Types of Istighfar:

  • Daily reflection — say it after prayers, during commutes, or when you’re alone.
  • Tears in the night — cry and pour your heart out.
  • In public wrongs — if you’ve wronged someone, fix it and ask Allah sincerely.

Istighfar isn’t weakness. It’s strength in humility. It’s how you keep your heart soft, your soul awake, and your connection with your Lord alive.
